THE INDIAN STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY SOCIETY

PREAMBLE

India has been gradually emerging as a manufacturing hub for a  wide range of products ranging from transportation to energy sectors and from heavy engineering down to biomedical devices. Structural integrity is the common thread running through all these as it determines both their operational safety as well as their condition monitoring. What makes India special in this regard is the diversity of operational conditions including environment as well as service usage. The country represents a unique playing field for the application of numerous disciplines that constitute the interdisciplinary world of Structural Integrity. With current trends suggesting that India is likely over the coming years to emerge as one of the world’s dominant economies, the market for Structural Integrity related applications is likewise bound to grow. Several Centres of Excellence have emerged in academia, in government research laboratories and in industry in various aspects of Structural Integrity. The time has come to create an umbrella organization to serve as a forum for interaction between these groups and as a platform to extend their expertise across industry and academia.

Several Indian engineers and scientists engaged in Structural Integrity research got together on the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on November 29, 2013 to – form the Indian Structural Integrity Society (InSIS). InSIS sees several benefits of an organized effort in Structural Integrity including (a) available data base of experts in various aspects of Structural Integrity to advise industry and government (b) facilitate the formation of national teams of experts to tackle big and complicated Structural Integrity problems (c) provide a stage for scientists and engineers to present their research and research ideas (d) to interface with standards development organizations nationally and internationally to develop standards on materials testing suited to Indian needs (e) contribute to continuing education by offering courses and helping Indian universities and colleges in developing Structural Integrity related curricula and (f) provide more opportunities for international exposure for Indian scientists and engineers by effectively interfacing with other similar societies.

A committee consisting of the following members was appointed and approved by those present at the meeting to draft the bylaws and statutes and to conclude the formalities of forming the Society:

InSIS is privilege to enjoy the patronage of Prof. P Rama Rao, whose vision for Structural Integrity goes back several decades. He, along with Dr. S.R. Valluri and Prof. DMR Taplin was responsible for organizing the International Congress on Fracture (ICF’6) in New Delhi, Dec 1984. Prior to that, Dr. Valluri hosted the first National Workshop on Fatigue Fracture and Failure Analysis in 1979.

The Statutes and Bylaws have been developed with a long-term vision in mind for InSIS. The Society is expected to develop as a bottoms-up organization that depends on the initiatives of its members that are supported by the Society if they are in line with its scope. It is expected that various aspects and activities of InSIS will take some time to develop and reach a steady-state.

The Objectives of the InSIS

The aims of InSIS are to develop and extend knowledge in all aspects of Structural Integrity and disseminating that knowledge world-wide with the goal of improving the safety and performance of engineering equipment, individual components and structures. Specifically:

  • To foster research and collaboration in the prevention of failure of engineering materials, components and structures subjected to mechanical loading and the associated degradation phenomena.
  • To encourage interdisciplinary research and education into physical behavior of engineering components, materials and structures.
  • To develop new test methods, new numerical methods, and engineering estimation methods for structural integrity assessment.
  • To improve engineering designs
  • To improve manufacturing, inspection and maintenance procedures
  • To develop methods for interpretation of material property data, probabilistic assessments, and tools for failure prevention and management.
  • To disseminate knowledge, by means of scientific publications, procedure documents, and referring developments to national and international code-making bodies where relevant.
  • To educate young engineers and scientists in structural integrity matters
  • To act as an independent body in communicating with the public and to advise central and state governments on matters of risks of failures in major components where such failures represent hazards to public safety.
  • To develop standards, proposals, and when necessary emergency standards relating to Structural Integrity. The preparation of standard practices, guides, terminology, and test methods are included in this development;
  • Promoting research and development of, education related to, methods to evaluate the slow degradation and fracture characteristics of materials and structures;
  • InSIS is a non-profit organization run by an elected Executive Committee that is instructed by and responsible to the membership of the Society.
